How to Properly Dispose of Medications

How to Properly Dispose of Medications

How to Properly Dispose of Medications

Medication management involves proper disposal of medicines. Many people often overlook this with the notion that unused, expired, or unwanted medicines can be disposed of easily. But that shouldn’t be the case.

The Drug Enforcement Administration holds a program to allow you to get rid of your unused medications. The DEA’s take-back programs happen every April and October of the year. Through this, you can dispose of all kinds of drugs including narcotics.

If you haven’t had time to drop your medication during these times, another option you have is with a pharmacy in Union City, New Jersey. Some pharmacies in the area offer disposal stations or mail-back programs for medicines that you haven’t used.

If both options are not available, you may dispose of your prescription or OTC medicine by flushing them in your toilet. Just make sure that your meds are in the FDA Flush List. If they are not, you must first remove the medicine from their original storage and mix them with dirt, cat litter, or coffee grounds. Then, put the mixture in a sealable container such as zip locks before throwing them out to the garbage. Also, make sure that you’ve removed any personal information written on the original container before disposal.
